Historic Resolution Adopted by Costa Mesa: Official Position Taken to Ban Dental Mercury Fillings

Experts and citizens gathered at Costa Mesa City Council Chambers to speak against the use of the mercury silver filling. Dr. James Rota, a Los Angeles biological dentist and past UCLA dental educator, was among the speakers at this historic event. He will also be speaking at a free seminar in Los Angeles to continue the discussion and education of the dangers of amalgam fillings to people and the environment.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) October 26, 2010

The Costa Mesa City Council adopted an historic resolution regarding the ban of dental amalgam filling, also known as the silver-mercury filling. In response to the need for more public education regarding the dangers of the mercury filling, Dr. James Rota, DDS is speaking at a free seminar on Wednesday, November 10, at 6:30 pm, regarding the safe removal of the toxic dental amalgam filling, detoxification, and biological dentistry (http://www.drrota.com).

The resolution was sponsored by Gary Monahan, former Mayor of Costa Mesa and sitting Council Member. “This is way overdue here in the United States, and especially California,” said Monahan at Tuesday night’s meeting. Monahan also went on to cite Zogby Poll results wherein 94% of Californians believe that their dentist should be required to inform them about the various types of mercury and non-mercury fillings that are available before filling a cavity.

Californians for Green Dentistry (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Californians-for-Green-Dentistry-Non-Profit/106... organized the presentation, which included several highly informative and moving testimonies including Anita Gonzalez-Tibau and Attorney Charles Brown, Executive Director of Consumers for Dental Choice (http://www.toxicteeth.org) and President of the World Alliance for Mercury-Free Dentistry. Brown stated that “Amalgam is a primitive, pre-Civil War product. It is a colossal pollutant.”

According to Californians for Green Dentistry, “The mercury implanted into the teeth of unsuspecting patients ultimately ends up back in our environment: (1) in our water via dental clinic releases and household toilets; (2) in our air via cremation, sludge incineration, dental clinic emissions, and human respiration; and (3) in our land via landfills, burials, and fertilizer.”

Also among the speakers were Dr. James Rota and Dr. Chester Yokoyama, DDS, a former California Dental Examiners Board member. When asked by Mayor Mansoor why there is a hindrance of dentists changing to non-mercury fillings, Dr. Rota responded, “Dentists were taught in school that when you mix silver, tin, zinc and copper with mercury, you have an inert, stable mass. However, new technology now reveals that this isn’t true. But we didn’t know that then.”

Dr. Rota went on to say that the diseases which result from the mercury toxicity (http://www.talkinternational.com) are not diagnosed by the dentist. They are diagnosed by the physician. Except in acute toxicity cases, when a patient has a conventional blood or urine test, chronic mercury will not be found, as it is trapped in the tissues, and not detected in blood or urine. It wasn’t until chelating agents were developed that enabled the physician to measure and release the mercury.

Mercury is a well-known neurotoxin. Once mercury is discharged to the environment, it converts to methylmercury, a very toxic form, and bio-accumulates in fish. The EPA has designated mercury as its Number One hazardous waste. Amalgam is made up of approximately 40% to 50% mercury, 25% silver, and a 25% to 35% mixture of copper, zinc, and tin.

The discussion of the Monahan Resolution resulted in increased awareness by the Council and audience regarding the multiple dangers of using mercury fillings. “I wasn’t familiar with this at all until Councilman Monahan brought it forward… I have mercury fillings. Now I am concerned,” as stated by Council Member Wendy Leece.

Further speaking of dental amalgams, Dr. Rota strongly urges anyone who is considering having the silver mercury filling removed from their teeth to ensure that procedure is performed by a dentist that adheres to the IAOMT protocols. Californians for Green Dentistry encourages people to tell their city council that it is time to hold public hearings to address the dental mercury pollution problem in their own community. Furthermore, the Resolution adopted by the City of Costa Mesa “directs that copies of this resolution be disseminated to the City’s State and Federal representatives and to the other 33 cities in Orange County with a request that they adopt similar resolutions.” The Resolution and videos of the October 19 Meeting may be viewed online at http://www.TALKInternational.com (http://www.talkinternational.com/costa-mesa-resolution.html).
